Students and staff at Cascade Elementary had 1 million reasons to celebrate Wednesday — 1,003,050 reasons, to be exact. Students at the school ate their way through 1,003,050 Cheerios, winning the school first place in a statewide breakfast contest and a few special rewards, including a visit from three-time Olympic gymnast Dominique Dawes.

The 36th annual Greencastle-Antrim School District Cumberland Life Festival was held Friday, May 15, at Tayamentasachta, a Center for Environmental Learning, in Greencastle. The annual event showcases eighth-grade students demonstrating various activities such as fudge and cider making, square dancing and Civil War life to students in kindergarten through seventh grades.

Sixty-five teams came together over the weekend, May 15 and 16, to raise $170,205 for the American Cancer Society during the 15th annual Greencastle Relay for Life. The Relay, held from 4 p.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Saturday at Greencastle-Antrim High School’s Kaley Field, boasted 789 walkers. A total of 199 of the walkers are cancer survivors, and 830 luminaries were lit Friday night both for survivors and for people who have lost their battles with cancer. The theme this year is “Celebrate-Remember-Fight Back.”

Greencastle-Antrim ran past Scotland in a Mid-Penn Capital Division high school track and field meet Thursday, April 30, in Greencastle. The Blue Devil boys won 117-32 while the girls won 122-26. Seth Group set a school and stadium record in the boys javelin with a first-place launch of 183-3 while Katrina Wright did the same in the girls shot put with a winning throw of 38-9 1/2. The girls 400 relay team of Tache Smothers, Rachelle Piper, Gretchen Westley and Danae Timmons set a new stadium record with a time of 52.6 seconds.

The Waynesboro boys and girls track and field team defeated county rival James Buchanan Tuesday in Mid-Penn Capital Division competition at Indian Stadium. The Waynesboro boys won 89.5-60.5, while the Maidens won 106-44.
